Color changing inks, or thermochromic inks are available in two different forms - Reversible and irreversible. Reversible ink can be used on either side of a label, and can be used multiple times. These inks are commonly used in thermochromic technology. Irreversible thermochromic ink means that it can only be used one time. These inks are better suited for users who do not have access to the label on the product being tested. When coming into contact with sunlight or UV light, reversible photochromic dyes will change color. These dyes can be used to create products that will change color in sunlight or UV light, but change back to regular color once taken out of the light. Products can be created with these reversible photochromic dyes so that when taken outside they suddenly change into a whole new color. Thermochromic inks and thermochromic paints react to the amount of heat they come in contact with. These heat sensitive inks will change their color when they come in contact with a source of heat. These inks can be used to create products specially designed to change when placed by heat, or taken away from heat. A child's favorite toy can be designed so that during bath time, when placed under warm water, their yellow rubber duck can turn red. Heat sensitive inks can also be used in this same way as a warning device. If these inks are used on a toy, the toy can change color when the water becomes too hot, and possibly prevent the child from being placed in scalding hot water.
